Christmas in Japan is a different experience than in Australia. It’s not even a public holiday!

However, on Christmas, Japanese families will often put together an interesting combination of foods and have a little family feast including KFC, a cream stew, pot pie and strawberry shortcake. Japanese families often have to make a booking at the local KFC or pick up a Christmas takeaway lunch to eat at home and KFC adds pot pie to the menu for the festive season. Where does this tradition come from… is it a nationwide belief that Colonel Sanders is Santa Claus, or something else? Either way, we’re leaning into and elevating this tradition to bring you a delicious Christmas lunch at Muku.

Chef Rina has prepared a 5 course lunch menu inspired by what you might find around the table in a Japanese household at Christmas time including:

Aburi tataki carpaccio

Avocado, zucchini, nori, yuzu, shiso and umeboshi

Bibai yakitori

Eringi mushroom, pecan, miso, garlic and cucumber salsa

MFC zangi

Tofu, white oyster mushroom, taro, white peach, sage, macadamia, yuzu and sansho

Cream stew pot pie

Housemade miso cream stew and pie pastry

Matcha strawberry shortcake

Kyoto-Uji matcha, strawberry, housemade sponge cake and light whipped cream

Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from our regular menu will be available for purchase on the day.

All food and drinks are vegan. Please advise of any other dietary requirements prior to the event. We are unable to make adjustments to the menu on the day.

Bookings are essential and seats are limited. Tickets cannot be refunded within 1 week of the event unless a replacement is found so please ensure you are able to make the advertised date and time.

Muku has a mix of seating options including dining tables with bench seating, dining tables with chairs, high tables with stools and bar seating with backed chairs. Please advise if you have a seating preference and we will do our best to accomodate otherwise you will be seated based on the number of people in your booking and the best fit on the day. You may be seated next to other ticket holders.

There may be minor alterations or substitutions to the menu based on seasonal availability, kitchen mishaps and breakdowns in the creative process but we’ll do our best!
